Burger King removes soda from kids meal options

Fast food companies have long been asked to stop putting sodas as an option in their kids meal for children. Now, Burger King is taking the steps to remove sodas from kids menus immediately.

According to Forbes, the company has been urged by MomsRising and the Center for Science in the Public Interest, to give their kids menu more nutritional benefits in removing soda as an option for a drink. With this decision, they are part of three other burger companies who are now making their kids meal options more health friendly. These include Wendy’s and McDonald’s.

The Senior Campaign Director of the MomsRising website’s Food Power Project, Monifa Bandale, made a statement regarding the agreement saying, “Parents and families across the country are applauding as one by one, restaurants are listening to parents and public health experts and starting to do their part to help keep America’s kids healthy.”

USA Today reported that the decision by the fast food giant was made late last month and happened in a stealth fashion.

The president of Burger King North America, Alex Macedo, wrote to USA Today saying the change to eliminating soda from kids menus was “part of our ongoing effort to offer our guests options that match lifestyle needs.” The menu for kids now only includes low-fat chocolate milk, fat-free milk, and 100% apple juice.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest have reportedly been lobbying the fast food restaurant for two years to see a change in the menu, which would promote healthier eating in kids and not lead them to believe that soda would be included every time they went out to eat.
