Riding on a roller coaster is supposed to be fun and exciting, but riders in New York got a scare when Coney Island’s Cyclone roller coaster got stuck, causing them to walk off the tracks in order to make it back down.
According to CNN, the incident happened on the Cyclone coaster in Coney Island and luckily, no one was injured. A spokeswoman for Luna Park stated the coaster got stuck due to an “isolated mechanical issue.”
Staff members assisted riders as they got off the tracks, Erica Hoffman, a spokeswoman said and she also said, “Safety is the number one priority for our guests here at Luna Park. Nobody was injured, and those on the ride were safely evacuated and will be able to ride again for free when it is open again.
Social media was filled with videos and photos of the scary walk the passengers made to get to safety at the bottom. One rider, David Zubin, said it was “the scariest thing I ever did” and he also said the bricks he was walking on looked as though they were close to breaking.
One witness who always goes to get on the Cyclone every year, Steven Hernandez, said that the ride had never gotten stuck before. It has been open since June 1927. Hernandez planned on using his complimentary ticket that the operations team gave him after the ride had to be closed for repairs. “I’ve been riding that ride since I was 14. I love it.”
NBC 4 New York reported one rider, Anna Dartany, said the help from park staffers’ helped to make it easier to climb down. “I’m scared of heights, but with their help I made it down.”
On opening day, 100 people had the chance to be the first to ride for free.
