Dog owners in Lakeville, Minnesota are on alert after several residents found objects wrapped inside hot dogs in their backyards.
KMSP reported that some of the objects inside the pieces of meat included pills, safety pins, and screws.
One resident, Lindsay Perez, found some of these items on one street where dogs have been known to roam around the area. Both of her dogs became ill after swallowing these objects.
Her dog, Pablo, is in the hospital after eating 11 screws while Yogi had a procedure done to remove three safety pins that became stuck inside of his throat.
At Banfield Pet Hospital, Dr. Alexis Wangan treated both dogs and spoke out saying, “If someone didn’t know their animal had gotten into contact with this, it could be several days later before the animal gets sick so by then it may be too late.”
Residents in the area have been notifying their neighbors of what is going on through their social media accounts while the police department is investigating.
WCCO reported that a high school student out walking his dog, Trucker, when he noticed his dog going after a treat that the student found suspicious.
Seth Paulson reportedly said, “I saw that it wasn’t something ordinary that a dog would eat and I told him to spit it out and saw it was a nail.”
Along with his mother, Kathryn, they began going door to door to talk to neighbors, who found similar treats in their own backyards.
