East Village building collapses after gas explosion, 13 injured

On Thursday afternoon two buildings in the East Village of New York City collapsed due to a gas explosion.

According to CBS New York, the explosion that was reported at 3:20 pm ET and 7th Street and Second Avenue left at least 13 people injured. Police stated that four of those people were in critical condition and two were rushed to Bellevue Hospital.

Several law enforcement officials told CNN that the possibility of this being a terrorist act was ruled out quickly.

Furthermore, a police source told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell that it is believed a contruction crew mishap is the cause. The belief is the crew hit a gas line which created the fiery blast.

The damage has been done to both commercial and residential properties. One of those commercial spots includes a sushi restaurant located the ground floor of the Second Avenue building. A Belgian cafe and deli was housed in the other building.
