Opening statements to begin in Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's trial on Wednesday

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will see his first day of trial on Wednesday after jury selection finally completed on Tuesday.

Reuters reported that the trial is expected to go well into June and the jury includes eight women and 10 men, all of whom are white. The process of selecting a jury has been ongoing since the beginning of January, with delays coming due to weather.

Tsarnaev is charged with the murder of three individuals during the Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013, which also injured over 260 people. He is also charged in the death of a police officer. The jury will also determine, if he is found guilty, whether he should be sentenced to death.

Lawyers for Tsarnaev are possibly going to use a strategy that will focus on the relationship Tsarnaev had with his older brother, Tamerlan, who was killed during a gun battle between officers days after the bombing that left one police officer dead.

Tsarnaev’s defense have said Tamerlan was the main orchestrator of the attack and that Dzohkar simply followed along with his plan due to his submissive nature.

Recently, lawyers on both sides argued over certain evidence that the jury would see, including the boat where Tsarnaev hid out before his capture, ABC News reported.

Other evidence that was discussed were photos of the deceased victims, with the defense saying the photos would only be traumatizing for the families of the victims. However, prosecutors have argued that the photos were important to their case and were “chosen carefully.”
