For anyone following the Boston Marathon bombing trial against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the prosecution today rested their case after jurors heard gruesome details related to injuries suffered from the three victims who died during the bombing.
According to the Associated Press, jurors saw autopsy photographs of 8-year-old Martin Richard and some were reportedly weeping as Dr. Henry Nields told the courtroom about the injuries Martin had sustained. Lawyers for Tsarnaev did not do a cross-examination, leading the prosecution to rest their case.
Martin had suffered injuries all over his body, including lacerations to some of his internal organs, as well as a wound in his abdomen. Jurors also saw a photo of Tsarnaev behind Richard before the blast. Richard’s younger sister, Jane, lost her leg in the attack.
Earlier, medical examiner Katherine Lindstrom had also described the leg injuries Lingzi Lu suffered that caused severe bleeding leading to her death.
Reuters reported that the bomb that killed Lu and Richard came from the bomb placed by Tsarnaev. A second bomb killed 29-year-old Krystle Campbell.
As previously reported, the defense is arguing that while Tsarnaev did participate in the bombing, his brother Tamerlin was the instigator of the blast. Tamerlin died during a shootout with police days after the bombing.
