Robert Durst arrested on charges of murder

Robert Durst, the son of a real estate mogul suspected in three murders including his wife, Kathy, has been arrested on charges for murder.

KTRK reported that Durst, whose story was documented on HBO’s The Jinx, was arrested in New Orleans on a warrant for extradition to Los Angeles. The arrest occurred at the New Orleans JW Marriot around 11 pm Saturday. While his lawyer said Durst would not fight the warrant, he did plan on fighting the murder charges when they return to Los Angeles.

The Jinx focused on the murder trial that Durst already faced back in 2003 in Galveston. He was also suspected of killing two women, including his wife Kathy and a friend, Susan Berman. The woman’s stepson, Sareb Kaufman, found a letter that was sent to his stepmother from Durst himself.

He made the claim that there are similarities between Durst’s note and the one that was sent to authorities anonymously by the person who killed Berman.

Durst was given a not guilty verdict in the Galveston case, even though he admitted to dismembering the body of his neighbor. Judge Susan Criss, who was the presiding judge at his trial, spoke out about the arrest. “I could not be more pleased about this, I do think this will stick. It’s amazing how many times the ball has been dropped when he’s been suspected of murder. But I’m hopeful for this one to stick especially so that the families can have closure.”

The Los Angeles Times reported that Kathy Durst went missing in 1982 after a fight with her husband and a friend of hers had revealed the woman was worried about her husband harming her.

Berman was killed in Dec. 2000 after being shot in the head. Police at the time had been unable to interview him, despite the fact that he was a strong suspect. The Galveston murder he stood trial for ended in a not guilty verdict since he said it was in self-defense.
