Springfield police dog dies after being impaled during exercise

In a tragic accident, a police dog for the Springfield, Massachusetts police department, died during an exercise on Friday.

NECN reported that the accident occurred near the dog’s home in Palmer. Grom, the 3-year-old canine, was running on a trail when a sharp branch that came from a downed tree struck him down. Police stated that the dog instantly passed away.

Grom was partnered with Officer Maciej Jasinski and had done work in tracking illegal drugs. He also participated in demonstrations at schools in the Springfield area.

The Boston Herald reported that Jasinski, who goes by the nickname ‘Jazz’ was with his K-9 during the accident and immediately notificed the supervisor of the unit, Sergeant John Delaney. The sergeant informed other K-9 officers, who met Jasinski on the trail.

Delaney said Jasinski “always wanted to be a K-9 officer and, in fact, that’s why he became an officer.”

Grom was a german shepherd who had been with the Springfield Police Department for two years. From the moment Grom and Jasinski were placed together, they appeared to be a perfect fit.

The Springfield Police Department’s Facebook page paid tribute to the beloved police dog.
