We haven’t even reached December 2015 yet, and we’re already talking about Star Wars: Episode IX. Last week, a rumor that J.J. Abrams would be helming that feature popped up, even though the film probably won’t come out until 2019.
The rumor was started by Latino Review, which notes that, even though Abrams isn’t directly participating in the making of Episode VIII, he’s still committed to working on the franchise. That means that Disney and Lucasfilm are trying to get him back for Episode IX.
Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Rian Johnson (Looper) will write and direct Episode VIII, which will be released on May 26, 2017. (That’s the exact 40th anniversary of the first Star Wars movie.) Johnson is reportedly set to write Episode IX.
Since we are so far out from Episode IX and The Force Awakens hasn’t even hit theaters yet, the Episode IX rumor has to be taken with a grain of salt. After all, Disney could decide that they enjoy working with Johnson so much that he could end up directing IX.
The Force Awakens hits theaters on Dec. 18. The first Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One, hits theaters on Dec. 16, 2016.
