The South By Southwest Film jury awards were presented last night at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. Hosted by Saturday Night Live’s Vanessa Bayer, it was here that the festival’s indie roots became more visible just by looking at the list of winners.
Trey Edward Shults’ KRISHA was the Narrative Feature Grand Jury winner. The film centers on Krisha, who tries to prove to her family that she has fixed her mistakes. It is based on a short film of the same name, which won Special Jury Recognition at last year’s festival.
The big winner on the Documentary Feature side was Scott Christopherson and Brad Barber’s Peace Officer. It centers on the militarization of the American police, with a look at the case of former sheriff Dub Lawrence, who created his state’s first SWAT team. Dub’s son-in-law was killed by the unit 30 years later and Dub works to uncover the truth about the incident.
Below is the list of the rest of the winners. The audience awards are announced on Sunday.
