Timeline for Amanda Knox's eight-year battle in Italian court

Since the murder of Meredith Kercher, who was Amanda Knox’s room mate was revealed in 2007, the courts have been busy for eight long years. On Friday, Italy's highest court overturned the murder conviction against Knox and her ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito closing out a chapter in their lives while putting a definitive end to the high-profile case that intrigued trial-watchers in the United States and in Italy.



Here is the timeline for an eight-year Amanda Knox journey to prove her innocence:

Nov 2, 2007

Meredith Kercher, 21, was found dead in her apartment in Perugia. Police on the scene said that she was murdered the night before.

Nov 6, 2007

Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, were taken into custody with Diya "Patrick" Lumumba, Congolese.

Nov 20, 2007

Lumumba who was implicated by Knox in statements to police is released from jail for lack of evidence.

Dec 6, 2007

Ivory Coast national Rudy Hermann Guede was extradited from Germany, where he was arrested, and jailed on arrival in Italy.

Oct 28, 2008

Knox and Sollecito were indicted on murder and sexual assault charges. Guede who was granted a fast-track trial, was convicted of murder and sexual assault and sentenced to 30 years of incarceration in prison.

Mar 06, 2009

Defamation charges were brought against Knox by Patrick Lumumba.

Dec 4, 2009

Court found Knox and Sollecito guilty of murder and sexual assault charges. They were sentenced to 25 and 26 years in prison.

Appeals court upheld Guede conviction and cut sentence to 16 years.

Appeals court ordered independent forensic report in which the report found much of the DNA evidence was unreliable and couldn't be used to convict Knox and Sollecito.

Knox and Sollecito cleared of Meredith Kercher's murder. Knox was told to pay 22,000 euros in compensation to Diya "Patrick" Lumumba, a barman she falsely accused of the murder.
