This past week’s episode of Criminal Minds focused on the subject of BDSM and how it could be taken too far. In an episode that features a book similarly written in the familiar vein of Fifty Shades of Grey, a man named Patrick Murphy kills his victims through erotic asphyxiation after they engaged in consensual sex.
The episode does a good job of distinguishing what it takes to embark in the world of BDSM and how a novel can attract people who don’t know what this really means.
As this is happening, Kate has some news for the team when she announces her pregnancy (Jennifer Love Hewitt is pregnant in real life) and she also deals with Meg’s reaction to the news. Her niece isn’t happy with this life change, especially since it would be her aunt’s first biological child. However, Kate has always viewed Meg as being the best part of her life and is trying to make things right.
For this type of storyline, the Criminal Minds team did an excellent job on the subject of BDSM. Plus, we still got to see some moments between characters that touched us, including when Meg and Morgan’s girlfriend, Savannah, had a talk about missing their loved ones when they had to leave on a case. Here are some of the top moments from “Breath Play.”
What did you like from this episode? Do you think there will be another pregnancy on the show since actress AJ Cook is pregnant in real life?

10. Grounded
Meg isn’t happy about some news in her family and in response, she acts out by attempting to pierce her belly button. In response, Kate takes her phone away. By the way, am I the only one hoping that this foreshadows Kate will see a text from the person talking to Meg who is posing as a teenager?

9. Baby news
Kate tells Morgan about dealing with a teenager and as she tells him why a teenager would choose to pierce her belly, she points toward her own belly with a big smile. He realizes she is telling him she is having a baby and he hugs her in congratulaions. Penelope sees this and when she finds out, she excitedly brings Kate into the room to share the news. Since Jennifer Love Hewitt’s pregnancy is written into the show now, does this mean AJ Cook will follow suit since she is also expecting her second child? We’ll see!

7. Bare Reflections
While investigating the crime scene, JJ finds a book called Bare Reflections, which is a book most likely based off of Fifty Shades of Grey. Rossi surprises her when he shows he is familiar with the book himself and they realize the murder must be based off an erotic scene in the book.

6. Gaining trust
The team eventually realizes that the unsub is gaining the trust of his victims after meeting them through reading the novel themselves. Since there is no mention of erotic esphyxia in the book, the unsub must be bringing that part into the mix at the end after he has woo’d the women.

5. Dabbling
Rossi surprises Kate when he tells her he dabbled in BDSM as a high school senior. They discover this after meeting with a woman who runs a group for people interested in this type of setting. She helps them understand the difference between knowing how to interact in the setting and people who don’t know what they are doing, meaning having read the book with no knowledge of what BDSM is about.

4. Motive
Through the investigation, the team discovers the unsub is likely married and soon, they find other victims from years previous. Hotch figures out that it is likely a life changing event coincided with the killings and thinks that he had children. Garcia is able to find the unsub, Patrick Murphy, after searching birth records and she discovers that as a child, he witnessed a neighbor unintentionally strangle his wife after bad sex.

3. Crossing the line
Patrick crosses the line when he discovers his children’s nanny, Charlotte, reads the book he has based his murders off. He attacks her in her home and after strangling her, his own daughter, Connie, walks in to discover what happened.

He is arrested after Morgan catches him and as he sees his daughter and Charlotte outside by an ambulance, Kate glares at him.
