'23 Jump Street' will make fake sequels from '22 Jump Street' canon

22 Jump Street ended with one of the funniest end credits sequences ever, taking us through ridiculous potential sequels and totally making fun of movie franchises. But now a proper 23 Jump Street is actually happening, and apparently those fake sequels will be incorporated into the storyline.

That end credits sequence kind of seemed like directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller making fun of the idea of ever doing another one of these movies, but then just a few months after 22 Jump Street was a big hit, 23 Jump Street was announced, as we previously reported. When that happened, we all kind of assumed the end credits of the most recent film would just be ignored as a funny, throwaway gag. But that would be too easy, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller love a good challenge.

According to Topless Robot, while speaking at WonderCon about their show The Last Man on Earth, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller revealed that the fake sequels are actually canon. "We’ve found a way that we love that makes those imagined sequels canonical and yet does something that we haven’t told you about yet,” Lord said.

So how on Earth could those sequels actually be canon? The imagined sequels got so insanely ridiculous, including 40 Jump Street: Retirement Home and 2121 Jump Street. Somehow all this insanity, including Schmidt and Jenko going to space, is part of the franchise's canon.

Slashfilm had a pretty solid theory that 23 Jump Street will take place at film school, and all the sequels will be made for Schmidt and Jenko's film class. Seeing as the first two movies are filled with humor referencing the process of filmmaking, that would make a lot of sense as a direction for this franchise.

Unfortunately, Phil Lord and Chris Miller are not currently signed on to write or direct 23 Jump Street. As of now they are only producers on the film, with Rodney Rothman writing the screenplay. Rothman also worked on the screenplay for the first two films, but it would still be a shame to lose Lord and Miller's unique style behind the director's chair.

Of course, this won't even be the most insane development for this franchise, with a 21 Jump Street/Men in Black crossover movie apparently in talks, as we previously reported.
