'Gotham' Recap: 'The Anvil or the Hammer'

It is early in the morning and Barbara and The Ogre are talking about their night together. Barbra is going to leave but The Ogre begs her to stay. He claims he has true feelings for her and explains his original intentions with her. She looks terrified and tries to escape but he grabs her before she can.

An exhausted Jim arrives at GCPD with one intention…to find Barbara and catch The Ogre. Leslie advises him to get some rest but he declines. Harvey brings in a young man named Jake who claims to know who The Ogre is. They interrogate him and discover that The Ogre was a regular at a brothel called The Fox Club. Jim thinks he needs to talk to Oswald. He is absolutely determined to find Barbara.

Edward carries several large suitcases into the forensics room which contain the body parts of Ms. Kringle’s boyfriend. He is going to try and dispose of the evidence.

The Ogre is holding Barbara in his torture room. He is continuing his emotional assault on Barbara. He unchains her and tells her the apartment is soundproof and that if she tries to escape he will kill her. He doesn’t want her to ever mention Jim and he shows her the pictures of his previous victims. She faints in shock while The Ogre keeps telling Barbara that he loves her and that she is “the one.”

Butch arrives at the club and starts hiding weapons for Connor so he can take out Maroni. Oswald is excited when Jim arrives and asks about needing a favor to get into The Fox Club. Oswald feels their relationship has been a little one-sided and Jim uses his aggressive persuasion to get Oswald to agree. Oswald tells Jim he now owes him a big favor. Jim gives the ticket to Harvey for him to use.

Bruce is sent a letter from Selina containing the key to Bunderslaw’s safe. A confused Alfred is going to go give Reggie a proper send off. Bruce is being given a tour around Wayne Enterprises when he pulls the fire alarm and sneaks into Bunderslaw’s office. He opens the safe and is confronted by Bunderslaw.

Bunderslaw knew Bruce would show up since the moment Selina stole his key. He claims Reggie was hired to find out what Bruce knew about the company. He wanted no harm to come to anyone. Bunderslaw tells Bruce his father knew about the corruption involving Wayne Enterprises. Bruce refuses to believe it and is introduced to a young executive named Lucius Fox. He walks Bruce to the elevator and tells him a secret about his father. His father was not what the company expected and was a stoic and kept his true self a secret.

Edward is in the forensics room preparing to dissolve the body parts. Ms. Kringle comes in, needing some evidence on a case. She sees the body parts and asks what they are about. Edward lies about an accidental death and when she asks if he has seen her boyfriend, he declines and diligently gets back to work.

We see Oswald assuring Connor the weapons are in place and that it should not be a problem killing Maroni. We see Maroni at the club celebrating his friend Tommy Bones being released from prison.
The Ogre wakes up Barbara and she has a feeling he is going to kill her. He wants to prove his love to her by asking her to tell him somebody to kill. He tells her if she doesn’t do it, he will kill her right now. She appears to lean in and whisper a name to him.

Harvey arrives at The Fox Club and goes inside and explores the eccentric and unique entertainment that is provided. Eventually, Harvey has enough and pulls out his badge and yells “GCPD!”. Jim arrives and confronts the owner. They talk to a woman named Sally who recognizes The Ogre. She says nine years ago he kidnapped her and tortured her. She can only remember the apartment was in Midtown and that the elevator went right into the apartment.

Connor arrives at the bar where Maroni is celebrating with Tommy Bones. He presents a gift from Falcone and then pulls a gun on him. Connor and his partner both have jammed guns and Maroni is furious and wants to send a message to Falcone. He kills Connor and his partner.

Butch informs Oswald that Maroni is still alive. Oswald laughs because he planned on setting this up so he could create a motive for Maroni to start a war and be out for revenge against Falcone. Oswald is setting himself up perfectly.

Edward is still in the evidence room with the skull of Ms. Kringle’s boyfriend. He talks to it then crushes it with a hammer.

Jim and Harvey arrive at The Ogre’s apartment and find it empty. They find the torture room and Jim knows Barbara was there. The phone rings and The Ogre is on the other line. He tells Jim Barbara never needed him and that he will see him soon. Jim thinks they are driving either on a bridge or near a train. We see The Ogre and Barbara at her parents house and Barbara has a weird look on her face. The Ogre then pulls out a knife and lunges towards her parents.

Jim and Harvey walk into the Kean mansion and see the butler dead. A record player is on in the background and Barbara’s parents are dead on the couch. Barbara walks in, covered in blood. She looks very confused to see him. Harvey is knocked down the stairs by The Ogre. The Ogre lunges at Jim and the two begin fighting. Barbara looks confused while they fight. The Ogre cuts Jim’s hand and holds a knife to Barbara’s throat. Jim draws his gun on him and before he can kill her, Harvey comes from behind and Jim puts a bullet in The Ogre’s head.

Bruce comes clean to Alfred. He tells him that Reggie was sent to investigate them and that Selina pushed him out of the window. Alfred seems upset but also understanding. Alfred reassures Bruce that his father was a good man. “Even good men have secrets” replies Bruce.

Edward finds Ms. Kringle reading a letter from her “boyfriend.” Edward tells her with men she needs to read between the lines and slips another letter in her desk.

Bruce takes of picture of him and his father and cuts himself out of it and puts it on his wall.

Jim is given an ovation from the GCPD and promises Leslie that he is only in love with her. We see Falcone receive Connor’s head in a box. We also see Maroni and Tommy Bones begin shooting up Falcone businesses around the city. Captain Essen announces to the GCPD that a gang war has begun between Falcone and Maroni’s families.

We see Oswald sitting at this club laughing about the chaos he has started…
