Fans of John Mayer, Jason Miraz, Phillip Phillips, and Ed Sheeran need to listen to singer/songwriting-newcomer Taylor Berrett's debut album, Great Falls.
The album, which Berrett recorded in London, was produced by Jake Gosling, who has worked with Ed Sheeran, Christina Perri and One Direction in the past. The album broke top 10 on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart, coming in directly behind Sheeran's X within a day of its Mar. 10 debut.
Each song seems very personal to the singer and draws on all the right strings of young women and men everywhere. Though mostly love songs, each number is realistic and honest.
In order on the album:
Those Days
Hypnotize Me
Broken
Whole Heart
The Best Kind Of Heartbreak
The Heat
When I Find You
Drift
The Village, The Wolf and The Boy
Arrow
The Horizon
The 22-year-old southern gentleman is from Northern Virginia and is engaged to the inspiration behind the song, "Next Best Thing," which is not on the album but has been performed live.
He jokes he knew he was meant to be a performer because the stage was the only place he wasn't in the way at a show (he's over 6 feet tall).
Lyrically, the words are most engrossing in "The Best Kind of Heartbreak" and "The Village, The Wolf and The Boy."
"There was a woman who loved a soldier. He was gone 9 months a year. She said, 'I miss who he is when he leaves and then I miss who he was when he's here.' They tell her, 'At least he makes it home.' She asks, 'What kind of sadness is the best?'" he sings in "The Best Kind of Heartbreak."
"And the boy says something’s wrong, but the people don’t believe. And the wolf comes in the night, while your mind is trying to sleep. And I make up ways to steal my joy, then when it’s real I don’t believe it, I swear it’s just like being the village, the wolf and the boy," he sings in "The Village, The Wolf and The Boy," which he has said in interviews is about living with anxiety.
The emotion he portrays in his lyrics reminds listeners of singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran. To draw parallels between the two young singers is a testament to Berrett's capabilities.
With this album (and a good marketing team), he may just become the next Sheeran.
