Jane The Virgin is back from a break with an episode focusing on Jane learning about the different things that come with parenting. In the flashback at the beginning, a young Xiomara is taking care of Jane and trying to do things her way, despite her mom trying to help. However, she ignores her advice.
Back in the present, Jane and her friend Linda are registering for gifts, but Rafael is at work. While Jane debates pacifiers, she sees Lina try something on that has holes right in the front of the breasts. Another mom with a baby tells them it is for pumping breast milk and she tells Jane about the wrap she is wearing the baby is in. Jane is in shock as she hears about things she had no idea about, including Lactation classes and a Doula.
At work, Petra is worried when Rafael tells her he wants to have a party for the hotel, but she is concerned about their budget. He assures her he is waiting on the special events permit he applied for two weeks earlier and things will be fine.
Meanwhile at home, Jane is trying on a wrap when Alba comes in. She notices Jane has a crib for the baby and the conversation moves to Xiomara, who she still has not spoken to since their fight a week earlier. Alba refuses to talk to her until she apologizes and moves out of Rogelio’s home. Jane reminds her they both said some awful things to each other and that her mom is happy.
Then we turn to Rogelio and Xiomara, who are kissing in front of an uncomfortable Michael after he has asked them if they enjoyed living together. Once they finish, Michael gives Rogelio a badge for his role and a certificate for his time on the ride along. Things only get more awkward when Jane and Rafael arrive so Jane and Xiomara can go to the lactation class.
Jane assures Rafael they aren’t close, until they share a secret handshake. After Michael leaves, Jane sees her mom is surprised at all the things that come with having a baby after all these years. Xiomara goes to get dressed while Jane and Rafael talk. She wishes he could go to the class, but he has to prepare for the party. When Rogelio comes in, he invites both him and Xiomara to the party.
Jane and Xiomara are walking to the lactation class and talking about how happy Xiomara is. She tells Jane to make sure to mention to Alba how big the house is. When the topic of love comes up, Xiomara realizes neither she or Rogelio have said the ‘L’ word. She wonders if it is unconventional and Jane reminds her of her belly.
At the lactation class, Xiomara is obsessing over whether she should wait to let Rogelio say the word first. Jane reminds her to be quiet as the teacher talks about having the baby in a cradle position. The teacher is talking about the necessity of breastfeeding and mentions the pain one women had in her breasts, making Jane worry. Xiomara points out Jane was bottle fed and turned out fine. She asks the teacher if she should know anything and when she should sign up for a Doula, but when she gives her due date (June 1), she learns all good doulas are likely taken, but the teacher mentions an online community she can join.
Xiomara tells Jane not to panic, but she does, and at home, she sits on her bed and does research on her laptop. She finds all sorts of terms that freak her out and after feeling stressed, she decides to close the laptop. Jane is panicking so much that she gets an image of her six-year-old daughter telling her she is going to have anxiety because of her and she’s a “terrible mom.”
Jane gets a text from her mom asking if Alba is home, so she answers the door to let her parents know the house is empty. Xiomara goes to get some boxes while Jane talks to her dad about his relationship with Michael. She asks him to “tone it down” since it makes things uncomfortable for her and Rafael. While he isn’t too happy about it, he agrees. Xiomara tries to make Jane feel better with a baby picture of her, but Jane focuses on the bumper in her crib and the pacifier in her mouth. Xiomara tries to assure her things will be very different when the baby arrives.
Aaron is talking to Petra about his childhood and growing up to find his religion. Petra herself did some research on Jainism and is curious about whether he is a strict practitioner for every aspect, including being abstinent. He tells her he isn’t and they share a moment when he tilts her chin up when she looks down. She gets a look on her face before seeing she has a text from Rafael. Aaron asks about her working with him and she assures him she is over him.
Michael and Rogelio are getting pedicures, which Jane was surprised about when she heard, and Rogelio tells Michael he needs to move on since things are apparently making Rafael feel uncomfortable. He does mention first that he is on Michael’s team, but he has to be focused on Jane first. However, when Rogelio is urging him to come to the party, he takes notice of Rogelio mentioning Rafael is uncomfortable and decides he will go to the party at the hotel.
Rafael is telling Petra that their application for the permit got lost and he tried to expedite things, but it didn’t happen. She is worried about the party going on and getting caught, but he assures her they will be fine if they keep things under control.
Jane is having lunch with Andie, the girl from her writing class and Michael’s ex, and they are discussing said ex. Andie feels like it might be a sign that they ran into each other, even though they haven’t spoken. Jane asks if she is speaking in class and Andie mentions she has to babysit her niece, so Jane offers to do it. She finds out the baby’s name, Luna, is the same as one on her list and thinks it is a sign.
Xiomara and Rogelio are getting ready for the party and she tries a little game about the word love. She shows Rogelio a frame she found with the word ‘love’ and he suggests using it for his mom. The narrator mentions Xiomara had met his mom three times in the year 1981 and they turned out awful. Xiomara has Rogelio do a game where they talk about things they love, but he doesn’t get what she is trying to hint at and mentions his mom again, this causes her to be upset.
Jane is with Rafael and trying to talk about baby things with him before he has to work for the party. She asks if they should have a doula, but neither necessarily want another person in the room for delivery. Jane tries to tell him she feels overwhelmed and that the thought of someone experienced helping her would help, but he gets a phone call that he has to handle something for work. This disappoints Jane greatly and Rafael tells her to come by after she babysits.
Back at home, Andie arrives with the baby sleeping in a basket. Jane is enthralled with how peaceful the baby is.
The party is swinging and while Petra still looks a bit off, Rafael is happy until he sees Michael and Rogelio arrive, so he takes a swig of his alcohol. Meanwhile, Rogelio begins to tell Michael about why Xiomara is mad, but he takes him through their intimacy first.
Jane is at her laptop while the baby sleeps and Andie comes in from what she thought was writing. It turns out she was going through her ex’s social media and Jane suggests she can text him. Andie asks for her help in sending a text and Jane suggests she ask him for a coffee. The baby wakes up and Jane holds her, only to see she is wet. Andie realizes she forgot to pack diapers and leaves to get some.
But as the baby cries, Jane tries to figure out how to swaddle her when Xiomara comes in. Her mom tells her to pick the baby up and Jane ends up arguing with her on what to do. Xiomara is upset and leaves, slamming the door, and causing the baby, who had calmed down, to cry again.
Later, Jane is playing peekaboo with the baby and is surprised at how long she is entertained with the game. Jane gets a call from Rafael checking on her, but they are having a hard time hearing each other due to the noise of the party. Alba comes home to check on Jane and finds out that she had a fight with Xiomara. It takes Alba back to when Xiomara had ignored her advice when Jane was a baby. She thinks about the fact that it is difficult to learn when not to parent.
Rogelio is telling Michael about Xiomara’s love game and it takes Michael back to when Jane thought he said he loved her. She mentions to him that she had been trying all week to get him to say the words. In the present, Michael tells Rogelio what Xiomara was trying to do.
Petra is watching Rafael when Aaron comes over to tell her that he noticed she was. Rafael is talking to a couple when two officers approach him. Petra goes down to join him where they find out there had been underage kids drinking alcohol on the beach. Rafael is surprised and then they ask him about a permit for the party. He tries to see if they can overlook it, but they aren’t playing that game and Rafael assures him they will shut down the party.
Andie is getting ready to take Luna home when she gets a call from her ex, Michael, so Jane offers to watch the baby. Andie goes outside and when she talks to Michael, she mentions his break up with Jane. Apparently she is fully aware who Jane is to Michael while Jane has no idea.
Petra goes to see Aaron and is upset since they are losing their liquor license and she has no idea how long it will be for since it will mean they will be unable to have weddings or other parties. She admits that she had let her personal feelings for Rafael get in the way of the business. Petra and Aaron share a kiss, but then she pulls away and tells him she shouldn’t have gone to see him while drunk so she leaves.
Jane is at the hotel when Rafael comes in drunk. He tells her about the liquor license being suspended and in his anger, he thinks she is judging him. She is unhappy with him and when she says they can discuss the baby things tomorrow, he tells her he has to work. The conversation turns to Michael, who Rafael is not happy with because he feels Michael is trying to get her back and she is naïve for not noticing. Jane is angry and leaves.
In the morning, Jane wakes up to a text from Rafael asking to talk. She sees an image of her daughter saying she shouldn’t grow up with them fighting, so Jane responds that she will come.
At their house, Rogelio talks to Xiomara and asks if Michael was correct about what she wanted to know and she admits he was. They talk and Xiomara tells him how she feels. But then, he tells her is still “getting there,” which doesn’t sit well with her. He ends up telling her he wanted to move in so they could be intimate alone, which doesn’t make her happy. But he admits that he is holding back since there is tension with his mom, so he has invited her to their home so they can work things out. Xiomara is clearly thrilled with this news.
Rafael and Jane talk, where she tells him she is worried that she will take care of the baby on her own while he has to work. She wants him to tell her he will “pitch in,” but he talks about getting a nanny. Jane wants to know if he will take time off to help, but he admits his job wouldn’t allow it but he would in an ideal world. He doesn’t want to fight and tells her he loves her, but she is starting to feel like those words aren’t enough.
Alba is sitting outside the house when Xiomara comes over. They begin to talk and fix things. Alba points out that whatever Jane does with the baby does not reflect her parenting and Xiomara reminds her the same goes for her. Jane interrupts and is happy to see they are talking. The mother and daughter apologize to each other and Jane admits to them she is scared and worried she won’t like being a mom. She is also scared she will have to do things alone, but her mom says they will “pitch in.” They hold hands and Jane sees an image of her daughter happy and holding a picture of them all.
Aaron comes to see Petra, who apologizes for the evening before and asks to be friends. They share a hug and the next scene shows a panicked Petra coming to see Rafael. The narrator takes us back to the moments she had with Aaron where she felt a sense of familiarity. She was hugging Aaron and saw a mark on the back of his neck, which is very similar to the one Roman had. Petra tells Rafael she isn’t sure what is going on, but that it is apparently Roman.
