The trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has now moved toward jury deliberations as they are now going to decide on his guilt in the charges he is facing in relation to the Boston Marathon bombing that left three dead.
According to ABC News, jurors will be deliberating on 30 criminal charges that Tsarnaev faces, of which 17 are eligible for the death penalty. Tsarnaev, who is accused of helping his brother Tamerlan orchestrate the April 15, 2013 bombing that left three people dead and over 200 people wounded, faces the possibility of either life in prison or the death penality.
The prosecutor made their closing arguments on Monday, in which they described the defendant as a radical who claimed the motive of the attack was in response to the killing of Muslims overseas by the United States.
In return, the defense openly admitted that Tsarnaev did play a role in the bombing, but tried to place the bulk of the responsibility of it on his older brother, who died in a police shoot out days after the bombing. Judy Clarke, his attorney, said “If not for Tamerlan, it [the bombing] wouldn’t have happened.”
CNN reported that the jury saw video on Monday of the bombing and that there were sounds of a child crying out.
Family members of the victims and survivors watched the proceedings, including Bill Richard, who lost his eight-year-old son in the attack.
If Tsarnaev is found guilty of any of the 17 eligible death penalty charges, the trial will go to the penalty phase to determine if he should get life in prison or the death penalty.
