Thursday, April 16, 2015 was officially National High Five Day.
The organization, known as National High Five, began this friendly tradition in 2002 when college-age students handed out free lemonade and, of course, high-fives at the University of Virginia. Now, it’s a national holiday celebrated by giving out high-fives to anyone and everyone every year on the third Thursday in April.
This year participants were able to document their epic gestures through the trending Twitter #NH5D. Amazon even posted a Vine with the caption, “Double tap to high five us. Don’t leave us hangin. #NationalHighFiveDay.” The six-second video depicts all the different ways to high five.
Photos were shared through Twitter including anything from dog high-fives, to sports teams’ celebration videos, to epic fail, to celebrity references, and everything in between.

What’s more important is the opportunity provided by spreading camaraderie on National High Five Day through raising money for Action For Healthy Kids, a partnering organization fighting against childhood obesity and diabetes in youth.
National High Five Day brings smiles to faces across the nation. So go ahead, high five that stranger riding the bus with you, or that person walking down the street. Celebrate the little things in life on this national holiday by slapping palms with the person nearest you.
