The 74th annual Peabody Awards were announced this morning at the University of Georgia, reflecting the diversity of television’s best-written shows from the past year. Honorees include Fargo, The Americans, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Inside Amy Schumer. Jane the Virgin was also toasted with yet another award.
The Peabody entertainment awards will be handed out on May 31, with Portlandia’s Fred Armisen hosting at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. It will air on Pivot TV with a 90-minute special on the Peabody awards.
FX had two winning shows, with both The Americans and Fargo receiving honors. Cinemax’s acclaimed The Knick, which features episodes directed by Steven Soderbergh, also made the list. HBO was represented by Last Week Tonight, which has won wide critical praise for Oliver’s commentary and satire.
Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer was praised thanks to her “comic intelligence that’s smart, distinctively female and amiably profane.”
The BBC’s The Honourable Woman with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sundance TV’s Rectify and Black Mirror, which airs on Channel 4 in Britain, were also winners.
Sir David Attenborough is receiving an individual Peabody for his nature documentaries, while public radio series Afropop Worldwide will receive the institutional award.
News and radio Peabody winners are announced on Monday. Winners for documentary, public service, education and children’s shows will be announced on April 23.
