Sofia Vergara's ex, Nick Loeb, says keeping embryos frozen is 'tantamount to killing them'

Sofia Vergara’s ex, Nick Loeb, wrote an essay for the New York Times to further the discussion about the embryos they created during their relationship, which he wants to keep.

As we previously reported, Loeb filed a lawsuit against Vergara over his desire to keep the embryos they created with his sperm and her eggs. The Modern Family star has denied wanting to destroy the embryos, but does want to keep them frozen indefinitely.

In the essay, Loeb writes, “We signed a form stating that any embryos created through the process could be brought to term only with both parties’ consent. The form did not specify — as California law requires — what would happen if we separated. I am asking to have it voided.”

Loeb brings in his religious beliefs and argues that a woman is able to bring a pregnancy to term even without the consent of the man, so this is no different.

“When we create embryos for the purpose of life, should we not define them as life, rather than as property? Does one person’s desire to avoid biological parenthood (free of any legal obligations) outweigh another’s religious beliefs in the sanctity of life and desire to be a parent?” he asked.

He went on to reveal their first two embryos died when being transferred to a surrogate in 2013 after two miscarriages, so they created two more. But when he gave her an “ultimatum” about another surrogacy try, they split.

Loeb referred to the embryos as their “girls” and offered to take on full parental rights. However, Vergara wishes to keep the embryos frozen and has no desire to have children with her ex. She’s currently engaged to Magic Mike XXL star Joe Manganiello.

“I asked her to let me have the embryos, offering to pay for all expenses to carry our girls to term and raise them,” he wrote. “If she did not wish to share custody, I would take on full parenting responsibilities and agree to have her declared an egg donor.”

He concluded by saying Vergara's wish to keep the embryos "frozen forever is tantamount to killing them."
