The Lego Movie made way for a slew of Lego-themed features to come. Now those audiences know when they can purchase their tickets, as the release dates for an untitled Lego Batman movie, Ninjago and The Lego Movie Sequel are set or officially moved.
Found in a press release, reported by The Wrap, the new Lego Batman movie is now the first to come thanks to a February 10, 2017 release. With that, Ninjago — originally slated for a September 23, 2016 release — is delayed until September 22, 2017. Then, four years after the original's release, The Lego Movie Sequel builds it way into theaters on May 18, 2018, a week earlier than originally scheduled.
"We are very excited about dating our upcoming Lego animated features, which already have a worldwide fan following, built on the foundation of the first film," said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. "These three films already in the pipeline are just the beginning of a creative and diverse animation slate that will be delighting audiences for years to come."
Directed by Chris McKay, who worked as a co-director of sorts on The Lego Movie, the new Lego Batman movie is to be produced and co-written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who wrote and directed the first film. Will Arnett is set to reprise the cloaked character again, and also comes from the pen of Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunters).
Meanwhile, little is known about Ninjago. Lord and Miller, again, are producers, and they told Empire they have an Avengers-esque look at the films, and so Ninjago is associated with these other films in some way, shape or form.
More details are known, however, about The Lego Movie Sequel. Directed by Rob Schrab, who took over the position when McKay stepped down to direct the new Lego Batman movie, the direct continuation to the first film takes place four years after the first one and is set to feature more female characters. Lord and Miller are also, once again, involved as writers and producers.
