Wisconsin’s Sam Dekker enters NBA draft

Wisconsin junior forward Sam Dekker announced on Friday that he is entering the NBA draft.

By entering the NBA draft Dekker will skip his final season at Wisconsin. Dekker is unanimously projected as a first-round pick, according to CBS Sports. In a letter he said that he is excited about the next chapter in his life.

"These past three years have been the best, most memorable years of my life," Dekker said in a statement, USA Today notes. "Growing up in the state and being able to wear Wisconsin across my chest has been a dream come true. After lots of thoughts and prayers, I've decided that it is in my best interest to enter the NBA Draft at this time. It is difficult to leave Madison and the only state I've called home, but I'm excited for the next chapter of my life."

He went on to say that he can’t thanks his coaches, teammates, training staff, and the fans enough for what they have done. Dekker also said that he’s grateful for the opportunities that Wisconsin gave him.

Dekker is a native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He appeared in 113 games and made 81 starts at Wisconsin. This season he averaged 13.9 points and 5.5 rebounds, and helped Wisconsin to a school-record 36 wins, the Big Ten regular season and tournament championships, and made it to the national championship game, according to the Associated Press. He was named the West Region’s Most Outstanding Player after averaging 19.2 points and 5.5 rebounds and shooting 51.7 percent from the field in the NCAA tournament. Dekker scored 1,363 points and had 569 rebounds in his time at Wisconsin, the eighth Wisconsin player to have 1,000 points or more and 500 rebounds.

The NBA draft is June 25 in New York.
