Boston Public Library says Rembrandt, Dürer pieces are missing

The Boston Public Library said today that it is missing two valuable pieces of art that are worth over $630,000 in total. The pieces, including one by Rembrandt, were found to be missing last month.

Library officials found that the prints were missing on April 8 and immediately told Boston police, library spokesman Melina Schuler told The Boston Globe. However, a police report wasn’t filed until April 29.

One piece is a print of a Rembrandt self portrait, which is worth at least $30,000. An Adam and Eve etching by German painter Albrecht Dürer, which is worth over $600,000 alone, is the second piece that went missing.

“It is our hope that these two significant pieces have simply been misfiled,” Library president Amy Ryan said in a statement, notes WCVB.

Ryan said that the staff is currently going over the print collection to see if any others have went missing. The library has a collection of over 200,000 prints.

“As part of the search process, BPL is undertaking an updated inventory of the more than 200,000 prints and drawings that make up the print collection, and will conduct an independent analysis of security protocols,” Ryan said.

The Dürer engraving was made in 1504, while the Rembrandt piece was made in 1634.
