The Dallas Cowboys signed undrafted offensive lineman La’el Collins on Thursday.
According to NFL.com, Collins signed a three-year deal that is worth $1.7 million and is fully guaranteed. The deal has a $21,000 signing bonus. Collins was expected to be a first-round pick in this years’ draft, which was last week. However he is trying to clear his name in an investigation into the death of his ex-girlfriend Brittney Mills. Mills was pregnant at the time of her death. Earlier this week Collins passed a polygraph test related to the case, and a paternity test came back negative, meaning he’s not the father of Mills’ child, CBS Sports reports. Collins is not a suspect in the case at this time.
“What I would like to see is a guy -- who's really performed well for our team and has given us great leadership who has continued to raise his market level heading toward draft day -- be given just and fair market value,” Les Miles, Collins coach at LSU said of Collins future in the NFL.
Collins is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was eligible for the 2014 draft, but decided to play at LSU his senior year so that he could further refine his game. He played left tackle his final two seasons at LSU, but is projects more as a guard in the NFL. Last year Collins was the best offensive lineman in the SEC and was a 2014 All-Southeastern Conference lineman, according to the Associated Press.
Collins could play either guard or tackle for the Cowboys. He would probably prefer to play tackle. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told Collins that he wanted to build the greatest offensive line ever.
