Ken Hitchcock agrees to extension with St. Louis Blues

St. Louis Blues coach Ken Hitchcock agreed to a contract extension with the team on Tuesday.

According to the Associated Press, the deal is for one year and financial terms weren’t disclosed. Hitchcock’s future with the Blues was uncertain as the offseason begins. He wanted to talk to his family before making any decisions about his future. The Blues were among the many teams that met with former Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. Babcock signed an eight year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Hitchcock has been a coach in the NHL for 18 years. He won the Stanley Cup championship in 1999 with the Dallas Stars. In 2011 he became coach of the Blues. This season the Blues won the Central Division with a 51-24-7 record, but got eliminated from the playoffs in the first round. Hitchcock is the second winningest coach in Blues history with 175 wins, trailing Joel Quenneville who had 307 wins. He has a career record of 708-429-185, making him the fourth-winningest coach in the NHL, according to ESPN. He has the highest winning percentage of any Blues coach in the history of the team.

Hitchcock has led the Blue to the playoffs the last four years in a row. However they have failed to go all the way. It will be interesting to see if Hitchcock can lead the Blues to a Stanley Cup title.
