These days the average mens hair cut from a chain Hair Cuttery or a barber shop will run men close to $20, possibly not including a tip and this is based on the average customer with average money to spend. Celebrities with not-so-average pockets can afford to look their best at a very high cost. Mark Bustos, a celebrity hair stylist charges his clients $150 and up.
Bustos who cuts hair for celebrities at an upscale salon located in New York City’s posh Chelsea area during the week has clients who pay top dollar for his scissors and razor to touch their head of hair. On weekends, he takes his scissors and razor to the streets of NYC. He shows his heart of gold by being kind to the homeless. Most people will give spare change to the homeless, but Bustos goes the extra mile. He wants the homeless to feel good about themselves. He grooms the homeless for free and this is his way of giving back.
Bustos is featured in a Philips Norelco video, which is part of their new #BeAwesomeToSomebody campaign.
He told the New York Times, “I do it on the streets, on the sidewalks, in the parks,” he said, “so people who walk by can find some inspiration in what I do.”
Being that the homeless do not have access to wash themselves up, Bustos is careful to cleanse his equipment carefully and diligently before and after every haircut. He also said, “Whether I’m giving one at work or on the street, I think we can all relate to the haircut and how it makes us feel,” Mr. Bustos said. “We all know what it feels like to get a good haircut.”
In the touching video below, Bustos says, “My name is Mark Bustos, I’m a hairstylist based out of New York City. On my days off, I go out on the street and look for homeless people to help out. Whether it’s a haircut or just a conversation, I try to help brighten someone’s day.” Bustos feels that showing the homeless that they can clean up well and look great plus get that great feeling that one gets during a haircut then it can only help. “I think grooming helps them take the next step in life, just by giving them a little bit more confidence.”
