Milwaukee Brewers hire Craig Counsell as manager

The Milwaukee Brewers hired Craig Counsell to be their new manager on Monday.

Counsell is a native of Milwaukee. He spent the final five years of his 16-year playing career with the Brewers. During his playing career he won two World Series. After the 2011 season Counsell retired and had been working in the Brewers front office. Counsell got a contract that goes through the 2017 season, according to the Associated Press. He replaces Ron Roenicke.

"It's an honor, and it's humbling, but I feel like this is what I was meant to do," Counsell said. "I think I'll be better at this than I was at playing. Are we a contending team right now? We're not. We can't start over. Our record is our record. ... We can start being the team that we want to be."

Roenicke was hired before the 2011 season. The Brewers fired him on Sunday after a slow start. In four-plus years with the Brewers Roenicke was 342-331 and won the National League Central title in 2011, according to USA Today. He is the first manager to be fired just 25 games or less into the season since 2002. Since July 1 of last year the Brewers are 38-65.

The Brewers are currently 7-18, the worst record in the major leagues. It will be interesting to see if Counsell can turn things around.
