The New England Patriots released cornerback Kyle Arrington on Monday.
Arrington had signed a four year contract with the Patriots in 2013. He was scheduled to make $3 million this year and $3.5 million in 2016, according to the Boston Globe. He would have counted $4.625 million against the salary cap. There is a possibility that Arrington could rejoin the Patriots at some point.
"Want to take the moment to thank the New England Patriot organization for an incredible opportunity to be apart of such a first class franchise the last six years," Arrington said in a post on Instagram. "Definitely want to thank the fans and New England community as well. This has been my home away from home and it's been an amazing journey. From '09-'14 you guys weren't just my teammates, you are my brothers! Always......#PatsNation."
Arrington had spent most of his six years in the NFL with the Patriots. He led the NFL with seven interceptions in 2011. Last year he had 49 tackles, four defended passes, and two forced fumbles, according to Sports Illustrated. The Patriots were 16th in the NFL in passing defense last year.
The Patriots have now lost four cornerbacks. Arrington joins Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner, and Alfonzo Dennard as cornerback who are no longer with the Patriots. The Patriots recently signed cornerbacks Bradley Fletcher, Robert McClain, and Chimdi Chekwa and drafted Darryl Roberts.
