The New England Patriots released cornerback Alfonzo Dennard on Tuesday.
The move doesn’t work out in Dennard’s favor. Dennard had gotten an automatic raise, which doubled his pay, from $660,000 to $1.542 million, because he out-performed his draft status over the first three years of his career. However the raise didn’t come with any guaranteed money, so Dennard has no protection. The Patriots save $1.542 million and will be charged only $14,462 against the salary cap by cutting Dennard, according to the Boston Globe. Releasing Dennard creates $957,000 in cap space.
Dennard was drafted by the Patriots in 2012. Over the last three years he has played in 29 regular season games and four playoff games. He had 90 tackles and five interceptions in the regular season and two interceptions in the playoffs with the Patriots, according to ESPN. Last year Dennard went down on the depth charts before he was placed on season-ending injured reserve in December. The Patriots coaching staff isn’t happy with Dennard’s work ethic and dedication, and he missed a lot of workouts this offseason.
The Patriots have signed three cornerbacks this offseason. They will join Kyle Arrington, Bradley Fletcher, Robert McClain, Chimdi Chekwa, Logan Ryan, and Malcom Butler at an already crowded cornerback position for the Patriots.
