The first trailer for Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment’s remake of Point Break hit the web Tuesday, revealing that the plot is the same. It’s the little details that are changed to make it a modern action movie.
in the new version, Luke Bracey stars as Johnny Utah, an FBI agent who has a particular set of skills that may help the bureau stop a group of criminals who love extreme sports. The role was played by the late Patrick Swayze in the original 1991 film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow.
Edgar Ramirez (who worked with Bigelow on Zero Dark Thirty) co-stars as Bodhi, the leader of the group of criminals. Keanu Reeves played that role and Gerard Butler was going to have the part until he backed out.
Ericson Core was hired to direct the new film. He told USA Today earlier this month that his new film brings the story to a “slightly larger world stage,” especially with the Venezuelan Ramirez as Bodhi. Still, there will be some references to the original for fans to spot.
Point Break hits theaters on Christmas Day.
