California Gov. Jerry Brown signs mandatory vaccination bill

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed a controversial bill that would require children to be vaccinated in order to go to school.

The San Jose Mercury News reported SB 277 was signed on Tuesday and it mandates that schoolchildren in the state of California to be vaccinated so they can attend either private or public schools. The vaccinations would be required whether or not their parents believe in vaccinations for personal or religious reasons.

Along with California, West Virginia and Mississippi allow exemptions for medical reasons for children not to be vaccinated.

The bill was supported by both educational and health organizations in California.

NPR reported that the California legislature passed the bill on Monday before heading to the Governor’s office. A measles outbreak in December led to the bill’s introduction since much of the outbreak occurred due to lack of immunization.

The Associated Press reported that much of the debate over the bill dealt with the rights of parents to make the decision on vaccination. A medical exemption may be granted for children who have severe health issues, otherwise they will need to be homeschooled.
