Fredricka Whitfield has now apologized after her comments this past weekend over the Dallas gunman who fired on cops outside police headquarters.
As previously reported, Whitfield called the actions of the gunman “courageous and brave,” sparking immediate furor on social media. One police organization demanded an apology from both CNN and Whitfield for the comments.
Brian Stelter with CNN posted on Twitter yesterday that Whitfield was planning on apologizing while on her show.
In an on air segment, Whitfield said her words were wrong and she had “misspoken and in no way believe the gunman was courageous, nor brave.”
The New York Times reported the gunman, James Boulware, targeted the police department after losing a custody battle for his son. His father told the New York Times that his son blamed police for taking “his son away from him.”
Boulware had driven a van to police headquarters in Dallas and began shooting before leading police on a chase that ended when a police sniper killed him.
CNN spokeswoman tells me that @FWhitfield will address this on-air today; she'll say she "misspoke" & she does not believe gunman was brave
