Former South Carolina officer indicted in shooting death of Walter Scott

A former South Carolina police officer has been indicted in the shooting death of Walter Scott.

As previously reported, Michael Thomas Slager was charged with murder in April in connection with the shooting after a routine traffic stop led to Scott’s death. A witness had taken video of the shooting, which showed Scott running away as Slager shot him multiple times.

He was fired from his job after the shooting and now a grand jury has decided to indict, The New York Times reported.

At the time Slager was fired from his job, city officials were extremely critical of the events that occurred.

Prosecutor Scarlett A. Wilson felt that even though the case had received plenty of publicity, that a grand jury would remain unbiased when reaching a verdict. No trial date has been set.

In South Carolina, there is only one murder charge and Wilson said it was “unlawful killing with malice aforethought.”

Scott’s brother Ronald said his family were happy with the decision and said in a statement, “We are happy and pleased about that right now.”
