Kevin Love opted out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.
Cavaliers general manager David Griffin said last week that he expected Love and LeBron James to opt out of their deals and become free agents. Love’s deal for next season was worth $16.7 million, according to the Associated Press. By opting out he will be able to sign a deal for next season that would start at $18.9 million. He has said that he wants to return to the Cavaliers.
Love was traded to the Cavaliers last summer by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He averaged 16.4 points and 9.7 rebounds in his first year with the Cavaliers, according to ESPN. He didn’t play in the playoffs due to being injured. Last season was the first time that Love was on a playoff team in his NBA career.
The Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics are among the teams that will try to sign Love in free agency. The Portland Trail Blazer will most likely make a run at Love if LaMarcus Aldridge leaves the Blazers in free agency. The Cavaliers have talked about offering Love a maximum deal, however it is unknown if Love would take a max deal.
