Netflix to surpass major broadcast network views by 2016

Is the ever-growing streaming industry taking over television?

A Wall Street analyst firm said that Netflix will surpass major broadcast networks in views by 2016, according to Variety.

If Netflix were a television network, the streaming service would garner a larger 24-hour viewing audience than ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.

The analysis by FBR Capital Markets points out that Nielsen TV ratings generally do not include more than seven days of video-on-demand and DVR viewing or online viewing. Therefore, these are not factored into the major networks' broadcast views.

Fifty-seven percent of viewers would choose Netflix over a cable or satellite subscription, according to the analysis. According to a report by the FCC, the average cable bill is $64/month. Netflix's plans range from $7.99 to $11.99/month.

Netflix has over 62 million subscribers, according to Bloomberg. The streaming service's users streamed 10 billion hours of video content in the first quarter of 2015, which averages out to two hours of viewing per subscriber per day.
