Red Sox to acquire Alejandro De Aza

The Boston Red Sox have acquired, or are close to acquiring, outfielder Alejandro De Aza in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles.

The trade is for cash considerations. De Aza is in his third and final year of arbitration and is owned $5 million this season, according to the Boston Herald. He will be a free agent next year. He wasn’t activated for the Red Sox’s double-header against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.

De Aza was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2001 and was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 2004 Rule 5 draft. The Chicago White Sox claimed him off waivers in 2009. Last August he was traded to the Orioles. In 20 games with the Orioles De Aza hit .293 and in six playoff games he hit .333, according to MLB.com. He was designated for assignment last week by the Orioles after hitting .214 in 30 games. De Aza is a .265 hitter and has 41 homeruns in his Major league career.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said that De Aza will give them depth until Daniel Nava and Shane Victorino return from the disabled list. Carlos Peguero is the player that is expected to be dropped from the roster. If the Red Sox don’t drop Peguero then they will probably drop Jeff Bianchi.
