Ryne Sandberg resigns as Philadelphia Phillies manager

Ryne Sandberg resigned as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. Third base coach Pete Mackanin will be the team’s interim manager.

The resignation is a result of the Phillies struggling this season and changes in Phillies management that are coming soon. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro is in the final year of his contract. The team is expected to hire Andy MacPhail to replace Pat Gillick as team president soon, and Sandberg’s job wasn’t safe, according to USA Today.

"It's not an easy decision. In a lot of ways I'm old school, and I'm very much dissatisfied with the record and not pleased at all with that," Sandberg said. "I think that goes hand in hand with being a manager. So it's been a difficult thing to swallow, but I have thought about it for some time, and we've come to this day. The accumulation of losses was something that I take responsibility for and something that really took a toll on me. I do not like to lose, I hate to lose. I felt it was better now than later, for myself, my family, the organization."

He also said that with management changes coming he didn’t want to be in the way of those changes.

Sandberg became the Phillies interim manager in August 2013 after they fired Charlie Manuel. He became the full-time manager last year. As manager of the Phillies he was 119-159 over parts of three seasons, according to the Associated Press. Mackanin has 106 games of experience as a Major League manager. He has a 53-53 record as a Major League manager.

The Phillies, who have the worst record in baseball, are currently 26-48 and in last place, 14 and a half games out in the National League East.
