Sony's 'The Equalizer' sequel with Denzel Washington gets release date

It took a long time, but Denzel Washington is finally going to make a sequel. He will star in The Equalizer 2, which Sony plans to release exactly three years after the original film hit theaters.

Sony announced the date on Thursday, notes Exhibitor Relations. The Equalizer 2 - which we all hope will be called The Sequelizer - will open on Sept. 29, 2017. That’s the exact same weekend that the original film opened in 2014.

The studio first announced the sequel in April, but it’s still not known if Antoine Fuqua plans on returning to direct. It’s possible he could, since the film is so far off.

The director just finished Southpaw with Jake Gyllenhaal, then will be moving on to MGM’s The Magnificent Seven remake with Washington. He also plans on making The Man Who Made It Snow with Gyllenhaal. Since he seems to work so fast, he could probably squeeze them all in before 2017.

The Equalizer was based on the ‘80s TV series about a retired government agent trying to run from his past. In the first film, the abduction of a young girl played by Chloe Grace Moretz convinced him to get back in the game. The film made $192 million worldwide.

Although Washington has been in the business for decades, this will surprisingly be his first sequel.
