Doris Payne is a legend in the crime world and it seems as though she’s back to her old ways of stealing expensive jewels.
People reports that jewelry stores in Charlotte, North Carolina are keeping their guards up after a warning went out that what is believed to be a well-known thief stole a $33,000 engagement ring from a David Yurman store inside a mall.
It’s being reported that Payne is the culprit behind the burglary – an 84-year-old unsuspecting woman – who has a history of thefts around the world.
Not only was she most recently arrested in September 2014 after supposedly stole a diamond ring in California, but throughout her life she has taken jewels from Greece, Switzerland, Britain and France.
The email sent out by Charlotte law enforcement described the elderly woman as using the “slight of hand tactic” when she swipes the jewel while an employee is distracted.
"She is very good. She fooled the manager at David Yurman,” the email adds.
The VP of Diamonds Direct, a shop across from where the ring was stolen, said that Payne is an interesting character.
"Doris Payne is certainly infamous and she is a fascinating woman," Dovy Karberg the Charlotte VP of the store said. "It's outstanding that in her 80s she is charismatic enough to continue to pull this off. The way she carries herself, you would never assume she'd pulled off this level of heist."
Payne is so good at what she does that Halle Barry was set to play the thief in a movie back in 2010. The movie, however, never went through.
