'Amy' is one of the top-grossing documentaries in years

Amy is quickly becoming one of the top-grossing documentaries in years.

The film has become the top-grossing documentary of 2015 so far, pulling in $4.7 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It will likely pass 2014's Oscar-winning 20 Feet From Stardom, which grossed $4.9 million.

As we previously reported, Amy tells the story of the life and death of Amy Winehouse. The Grammy Award-winning British jazz singer died in 2011 of alcohol poisoning at age 27.

The documentary, directed by Asif Kapadia, has a 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has received outstanding reviews.

Box office observers believe that the film could earn at least $7 million in the U.S. Only three documentaries so far this decade have earned more than $7 million — Babies (2010, $7.3 million), America: Image the World Without Her (2014, $14.4 million) and 2016: Obama's America (2012, $33.5 million).

Amy was released in select theaters on July 3; it has since been shown in 435 theaters across the U.S. and will continue to expand to more in the coming weeks.
