Author John Green wrote an essay defending not only Cara Delevingne but also all actors out there who have to go through endless amounts of interviews.
It seems like the whole world saw the horribly awkward interview where Delevingne was told to “take a nap” because she looked “irritated.”
Green decided to explain why Delevingne acted the way she did in a thoughtful essay that really gave a perspective to both sides of the story.
He notes that Delevingne has been repeatedly asked if she had read the book, while co-star Nat Wolff was only asked when he read the book. The author found this very disrespectful.
Green also noted how as one gets asked the same questions over and over again people develop rote responses.
A popular question to ask was if he was involved in the film making process, which he admitted that he wasn’t.
“I did basically nothing and sat around all day eating Cheetos and telling everyone they were doing a good job. And then Nat would jump in and say, ‘John’s being modest. His understanding of the story and characters were vital to us.”
By the end of the interviews, Green found that even though he was telling the truth the rote answers felt like he was lying.
“At one point between interviews, I said to Nat, ‘I can’t remember if I even like Cheetos.’ And he said, “That’s okay, man. I can’t remember if your understanding of the story was vital to us.”
Delevingne refused to become robotic in interviews, which Green admires. “Cara Delevingne doesn’t exist to feed your narrative or your news feed—and that’s precisely why she’s so f**king interesting.”
