Linebacker Justin Houston signed a record deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday.
The Chiefs and Houston had until 4 pm on Wednesday to agree to a multiyear contract, otherwise they would have had to wait until after the 2015 season to agree to a long term deal. Houston signed a six-year, $101 million deal that has $52.5 million guaranteed, according to ESPN. The deal is the biggest contract in Chiefs history and the biggest for a linebacker in NFL history.
"He's one of the top players in the National Football League and a premier pass-rusher," Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said in a statement. "As we've said from the beginning, Justin the football player, and the person, is someone we wanted to be a part of our organization. We are very happy that he will remain a member of the Chiefs."
Houston has made the Pro Bowl the last three seasons. He was also a first-team All-Pro player last year. Last year he led the NFL with 22 sacks, which is half a sack short of the NFL single-season record, according to NFL.com. In four seasons Houston has 198 tackles, 48 and a half sacks, seven forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, one interception and 19 defended passes, CBS Sports notes.
The deal makes Houston the second-highest paid defensive player in the NFL in terms of guaranteed money, behind Ndamukong Suh of the Miami Dolphins. Houston joins Suh, J.J. Watt, Calvin Johnson, and Mario Williams as non quarterbacks who are making $16 million a season.
