‘Grey’s Anatomy’ creator Shonda Rhimes explains why she killed off Derek Shepherd

If people haven’t figured out that the beloved Derek Shepherd or McDreamy was killed off in Grey’s Anatomy then they have been living under a rock. Fans of the hospital drama wondered why creator Shonda Rhimes would do such a horrible thing, so when asked about it at the Television Critic’s Association, Rhimes knew she had to clear the air.

When actor Patrick Dempsey alerted Rhimes that he was going to leave the show, she needed to figure out a way to end Meredith Grey’s relationship, played by actress Ellen Pompeo, with Derek Shepherd.

To Rhimes, the choice was clear. He had to die.

According to Entertainment Tonight, destroying the relationship between Shepherd and Grey was the hardest thing Rhimes had to do.

The other option would be for Shepherd to leave Grey, but Rhimes didn’t see the sense in that decision.

“That would suggest the love wasn’t true, the thing we had said for 11 years was a lie.”

The only way to preserve the love between the two characters was to unwillingly separate the characters by killing one of them off.

But the show must go on! ABC president Paul Lee says that Grey’s Anatomy will stick around for a long time.

Lee explains that the show will reinvent itself. They have even already cast a new doctor to take over Shepherd’s spot.

But fans know that McDreamy can never be replaced.
