Angelina Jolie talked about her upcoming film with husband, Brad Pitt, By the Sea and explained how they were able to take aspects of their real-life relationship to help fuel some of the more intense scenes.
By the Sea is Jolie’s third directorial effort after In the Land of Blood and Honey and Unbroken, and her second film with Pitt following 2006's Mr. and Mrs. Smith. She wrote the film and co-stars in it as well.
She has previously talked about By the Sea centering on a couple that has a “difficult marriage,” so she talked more at length about that to Vanity Fair.
“I’d be directing myself and him in a scene where we’re having a fight, and I’d be pulling out the parts [of him] that have an aggression toward me or when you’re frustrated with each other—it was very heavy,” she explained.
“We kept joking that all of the crew felt like they were living in a house where the parents were fighting and you don’t know where to stand or where to look.”
Last year Jolie joked to Vanity Fair that a “few friends asked if we were crazy” for filming such a dark film right after their wedding. They filmed it in Malta during their honeymoon.
