The Boston Red Sox hired former Detroit Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski as their new president of baseball operations Tuesday night.
Dombrowski is expected to start immediately. The Red Sox are the fifth major league team that Dombrowski will have worked for. He offered general manager Ben Cherington the chance to stay as general manager but Cherington declined the offer, according to the Associated Press. Dombrowski plans on hiring a new general manager. Former Atlanta Braves GM Frank Wren is a leading candidate for the gm position, USA Today notes.
"I'm excited. This is a great opportunity,” Dombrowski said. "Boston is a tremendous baseball city, the Red Sox are a great franchise, and they have some of the best young talent in the game, both at the big-league level and in their minor-league system. It's a great ownership group, they want to win, and they want to win the right way."
Dombrowski was hired by the Tigers in 2002 as president and chief executive officer. Shortly after the 2002 season started he assumed general manager responsibilities as well. He was fired by the Tigers on August 4. Under Dombrowski the Tigers won four consecutive American League Central division titles, made four American League Championship Series appearances, and won two AL pennants, in 2006 and 2012, according to ESPN. The Tigers also made it to the World Series twice during his tenure, but never won.
The Red Sox are currently 53-66 and are in last place in the American League East. They are 13 and a half games behind the New York Yankees.
