Ingrid Bergman turns 100: Top 10 films

Of all the countries to develop a rich history in cinema, Sweden might be the most surprising. The Scandinavian country has given us many great figures who have made major impacts on film history, including Victor Sjostrom, Greta Garbo, Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman. But perhaps the most famous gift Sweden gave the world was Ingrid Bergman.

Ingrid was born in Stockholm on Aug. 29, 1915, meaning that she would turn 100 this weekend if she were still with us. She died on her birthday in 1982 following a long battle with breast cancer.

She began making films in Sweden at age 19, although she’d already been on stage for two years before that. In 1939, she came to Hollywood to remake her Swedish hit Intermezzo, a tragic story of a woman who falls in love with a famed violinist. While that was followed up by several lesser successful Hollywood films, she became an international superstar in 1942, when she made Casablanca. Her role as Ilsa alone would have cemented her status in Hollywood, but that was just the start for her. Bergman won three Oscars - Best Actress in Gaslight and Anastasia and Best Supporting Actress for Murder on the Orient Express - and was nominated for four others.

Personally, I believe that Bergman is one of the greatest actresses to ever work in Hollywood. I’m sure my list will miss a few film performances, so let us know in the comments below.
