'Jack Reacher 2' heads into production this fall with Tom Cruise returning

Before gearing up to shoot another Mission Impossible movie, Tom Cruise will first be moving forward with a sequel to his 2012 action/thriller Jack Reacher.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jack Reacher 2 will head into production this November. Paramount is aiming for a late 2016 release date, and since the first film opened towards the end of December, we should probably expect that sort of time frame.

The original movie was directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who just worked with Tom Cruise on Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. Jack Reacher did okay at the box office, though at $80 million domestic, it was one of the lower Tom Cruise openings behind even Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow. Luckily, it was able to bring in $138 million overseas.

Christopher McQuarrie will not be returning for Jack Reacher 2. Instead, the sequel will be directed by Edward Zwick, known for collaborating with Cruise on The Last Samurai.

As pointed out by The Hollywood Reporter, Jack Reacher 2 should be an interesting test of whether Tom Cruise can open a movie outside of the Mission Impossible franchise. The latest in the series, Rogue Nation, has already grossed $115 million domestically, but Cruise's last few films haven't done nearly as well. Edge of Tomorrow took in $100 million, Oblivion $89 million, Jack Reacher $80 million, and Knight and Day $76 million. Can a Tom Cruise movie that's not Mission Impossible still be a massive hit?
