Some fans and bloggers expressed disappointment with Game of Thrones's most recent season, but Lost showrunner Damon Lindelof is defending the HBO series against those criticisms.
Lindelof spoke to Entertainment Weekly today and responded to the number of fans hating on Game of Thrones Season 5.
"I think we live in a clickbait-y media culture that exists to pick things apart," Lindelof said.
He praised Game of Thrones' production and said that as someone involved in television himself, it's mindblowing how they're able to pull it off. Yet fans are constantly applauding the series and then the following week suddenly expressing disgust, saying they'll never watch again.
"And I’m thinking: 'No, you’re not. Don’t be an ass,'" Lindelof said. "That’s like my 8-year-old saying, 'We’re not best friends anymore.'"
He's referring to the outrage that swept the Internet after certain Season 5 events like Sansa Stark being raped, Shireeen being burned to death, and Jon Snow being killed (although he may not be as dead as once thought).
The interview raises a number of fair points, and Game of Thrones has indeed become something of an outrage machine which prompts dozens of fans after every episode to claim they'll never watch again. And then sure enough, they're back the following week.
Lindelof was actually slammed by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin a few years ago after Martin voiced his disappointment with the Lost finale. Lindelof, who frequently deals with criticism head on, jokingly responded on Twitter, "In related news, my therapist just hit the jackpot." He has since deleted his Twitter account in order to focus on his work.
Damon Lindelof's show The Leftovers returns on HBO for its second season on October 4.
