After sitting out the disappointing fourth sequel The Bourne Legacy, Matt Damon will be returning in a brand new Jason Bourne film, and he has just spilled some interesting details about what the plot of the movie will be.
Damon told Buzzfeed that the new Bourne will reflect how the world has changed, and if the original trilogy is about the Bush presidency, the fifth film will be about the post-Snowden world.
“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” he said. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”
Damon said that he and director Paul Greengrass weren't sure what direction to take the franchise in, but after whistleblower Edward Snowden dropped the bombshell information about the NSA in 2013, that's when they knew they had their new plot.
As we previously reported, Bourne 5 will also star Tommy Lee Jones, Julia Stiles, Viggo Mortensen and Alicia Vikander. The film will be directed by Paul Greengrass, director of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatium. He'll be writing the screenplay along with Christopher Rouse.
Damon also revealed to Buzzfeed that production on the movie will begin next week, and the studio is aiming for a release date of July 29, 2016.
