The 'Jon Snow is alive' movement rages on as fans hunt for clues that the character will return for Season 6, but now even more HBO executives are promising he really is dead.
According to Deadline, HBO Executive Vice President Michael Ellenberg recently said in a press conference that Jon Snow "is absolutely dead." Deadline notes that audience members gasped upon hearing Ellenberg say that, which is kind of weird considering everyone associated with the show has been making identical comments for months now.
Ellenberg's statement was repeated by Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes in a separate event. As Time Warner is the parent company of HBO, Bewkes was asked to comment on the Jon Snow situation, with a reporter saying, "I actually heard that he signed back on for the next season? No?"
Bewkes responded, "Let me quote Mike Lombardo, the programming head of HBO: 'He's dead...dead.'"
Note that Bewkes didn't really answer the question. His response wasn't, "No, Kit Harington has not signed on for the next season." Instead, he takes a pause to consider his words, and then simply reiterates that Jon Snow is dead. As fans know, that doesn't really confirm anything, as the question isn't whether Jon is dead, but whether he'll come back to life.
So Jon Snow fans shouldn't worry about these new comments quite yet. Once again we're seeing HBO try to hide Kit Harington's return from audiences, yet while watching their words as to not actually outright lie. As soon as someone says that Harington definitely isn't returning, rather than just reiterating "Jon Snow is dead," then maybe you can start to be concerned.
The evidence for Jon Snow returning to Game of Thrones has been overwhelming, from Kit Harington being spotted on set for a solid month now to comments from Carice van Houten to a seriously fishy HBO store sale. So far, it's seeming that when Sam promised "Jon always comes back," he knew what he was talking about.
Game of Thrones returns for its sixth season next spring.
